WOLLASTON LAKE, Sask. – New funding is coming to Wollaston Lake Airport going towards some much needed upgrades to improve the facility.
At an announcement at the airport Tuesday, Buckley Belanger, Secretary of State for Rural Development announced funding from the Government of Canada’s Airports Capital Assistance Program of over $11.6 million to the airport.
According to the federal government news release, the funding will go to rehabilitate Runway 17-35, Taxiway A, and the apron. Runway 17-35 is the only runway at the airport.
The government adds there will also be upgrades to airport infrastructure, including the wind direction indicator, aerodrome beacon, runway lighting, and associated electrical gear.
Belanger made the announcement on behalf of Steven MacKinnon, Minister of Transport and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons.
“In northern Saskatchewan, reliable transportation is essential infrastructure. For Wollaston Lake and Hatchet Lake Denesuline First Nation, this airport means access to health care, essential supplies, family, and opportunity. This $11.6 million investment from our government will make those vital connections safer and more reliable,” said Belanger in a news release.
The funding is seen as vital for the northern Saskatchewan airport, as Wollaston Lake relies heavily on air travel in order for people to access the community.
According to the federal government, this project will modernize the key airport infrastructure and strengthen its ability to support safe and reliable aircraft operations year-round. The upgrades including runway lighting will also enhance operations during extended periods of darkness during the winter.
