REGINA, Sask. — Certain classes at the new joint school under construction in Harbour Landing may not be ready when the school opens in fall 2027.
The classrooms suffered damage after several small fires were set inside in May, according to the Regina Police Service (RPS).
“So the primary amount of damage is smoke, which we're starting to clean by hand,” explained Twylla West, supervisor of communications for Regina Catholic Schools.
Along with the fires, RPS says the development had also been broken into multiple times and vandalized with graffiti. Additionally, a trailer was broken into, and tools were stolen.
“Unfortunately, vandalism isn't a brand new thing to happen to schools,” said West. “But we just haven't been in a position where something was delayed because vandalism slowed down a building.”
Construction on the site began in 2025, with the facility intended to accommodate up to 500 Regina Public and up to 350 Regina Catholic students and will provide an additional 90 new childcare spaces.
Now, with uncertainty about classrooms being ready, RCS is considering contingency options should any spaces be unavailable for opening.
“We’re starting to figure out those options,” said West.
However, one of those options won’t include relocatable classrooms.
In the meantime, the Ministry of Education is determining the cost for the smoke damage through an insurance claim.
“While the insurance claim is still being processed, construction remains underway in areas of the school not affected by the fire.”
Further security has also been added since the incidents, including nighttime monitoring.
