Regina walk aims to raise awareness, reduce stigma surrounding FASD

REGINA, Sask. — A walk to recognize International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is happening in Regina.

The FASD Network of Saskatchewan is hosting the event at Wascana Centre Bandstand on Ramsey Drive in Regina starting at 9 a.m on Sept. 9.

“Our goal is to foster community understanding, reduce stigma, and build support for individuals and families affected by FASD,” said Andrea Kotlar, executive director at the FASD Network of Saskatchewan.

Each year on the ninth day in September, the community comes together to understand the importance of going alcohol-free during the entire length of pregnancy.

“FASD is often invisible and misunderstood,” noted Koltar.

Event organizers say FASD is a lifelong neurodevelopmental disorder caused by prenatal alcohol exposure.

The disorder can affect a person physically, cognitively, sensory-wise and behaviourally.

The events are expected to bring in over 100 participants and special guests.
