REGINA, Sask. — The Heritage Recognition (From Many Peoples, Strength) Act has come into force, with the goal of creating a new framework for recognizing the heritage months of Saskatchewan people.
According to a news release, the Ministry of Parks, Culture, and Sport has engaged with representatives of two dozen cultural and faith groups that have expressed interest in participating in the framework.
Engagement has concluded with several communities, including for Japanese Heritage Month and Ukrainian Heritage Month, which were formally added to the new framework for September. German Heritage Month, Islamic Heritage Month, Korean Heritage Month and Hispanic and Latin American Heritage Month are also anticipated to be added in October.
Engagement is ongoing with representatives of Saskatchewan's Christian, Hindu, Jewish, African Canadian, Chinese, Doukhobor, Filipino, First Nations, Francophone, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Persian, Polish, Mennonite, Métis, and Sri Lankan communities, the press release states.
The new framework ensures heritage recognition months are automatically proclaimed each year.
