MELFORT, Sask. — Conservation officers are asking for the public's help after two elk were unlawfully killed on private land southwest of Melfort.
Melfort conservation officers discovered a spike bull and cow elk at about 6 p.m. on Sept. 5. The animals were found about three kilometres south of Highway 41 and approximately 30 kilometres southwest of Melfort, between the communities of Meskanaw and Ethelton.
According to SaskTIP, the elk had been dragged behind a patch of bush in an apparent attempt to keep them from being detected.
Officers believe the animals were killed either earlier that day or on Sept. 4.
There was no active elk hunting season in the area at the time, and the animals were harvested on private land without permission.
A cash reward of up to $2,000 is being offered for information that leads to the arrest or conviction of the person or people responsible.
Anyone who knows who killed the elk or who saw suspicious activity in the area around the time of the incident is asked to contact the Turn-In-Poachers and Polluters line at 1-800-667-7561.
