ESTEVAN, Sask. — It appears the case is moving forward for a man facing 10 charges, including attempted murder, in connection with an April 2024 incident in Estevan.
William Joshua Curtis appeared in Estevan Provincial Court Sept. 14 by CCTV. At that time, he pleaded not guilty to the charges and his attorney Aleida Oberholzer said they were electing for the trial to be by judge alone in Provincial Court.
Crown prosecutor Suzan Wurtz, appearing on behalf of Travis Avery, who has carriage of the matters, said the trial is expected to take a week. With Judge Mitch Miller away on Sept. 14, the prosecution didn't want to set a week-long trial until he's back.
A case management session will be scheduled for Sept. 21 when Miller returns, and at that time trial dates could be set.
Curtis remains in custody.
Background: Curtis has been charged with one count each of attempted murder by discharging a firearm; pointing a firearm; discharging a firearm; aggravated assault; possession of a weapon for the purpose of committing an offence; uttering threats; manufacturing ammunition while unauthorized; and possession of a firearm while prohibited; along with two counts of manufacturing a firearm while unauthorized.
The incident occurred April 8, 2024 in the 1600-block of Third Street. According to the Estevan Police Service, he fled the scene after the incident. He was later apprehended at another house.
In December 2024, Curtis was deemed unfit to stand trial, and he was remanded to the Saskatchewan Hospital, a psychiatric facility in North Battleford. He was declared fit to stand trial earlier this year. His case has been in court several times since.
