ESTEVAN, Sask. — The Estevan Police Service (EPS) continues to see a surge in the number of break and enter incidents in the city.
The numbers released at the Sept. 17 meeting of the Estevan board of police commissioners show the EPS handled 13 break and enters in August, up from two in August 2025. Police had eight residential break and enters in August, along with four at commercial buildings and one for other, compared with one each for residential and business in 2025.
From Jan. 1-Aug. 31, the EPS has had 58 break and enters (32 residential, 19 commercial and seven classified as other), compared to 20 (16 residential and four commercial) for the same period last year.
Property crime was down in August but continues to be up for the year. The EPS had 46 property crimes last month, including the break and enters, along with 19 thefts under $5,000, 11 mischief/wilful damage complaints, a theft over $5,000 and a theft of a motor vehicle. The EPS has had 51 property crime incidents in 2025.
As of Aug. 31, the EPS has had had 310 property crimes, up from 290 for the same time period in 2025. The majority of this year's property crimes have been thefts under $5,000 (140) and mischief/wilful damage complaints (85). The EPS has also had 58 break and enters (32 residential, 19 commercial and seven other), 20 thefts of a vehicle and seven listed ss other.
Meanwhile, the EPS had 20 crimes against the person in August, with 13 assaults, four assaults causing bodily harm and three sexual crimes. There were 15 crimes against the person in August 2025.
The number of crimes against the person stands at 106 for the first eight months of the year, with 76 assaults account for nearly three-quarters of the infractions. Eighteen sexual crimes and 12 assaults causing bodily have also been reported. There were 111 such crimes in the first eight months of last year.
The EPS did not have any charges through the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) last month, compared to seven in August 2025. In the first eight months of this year, the EPS has had 16 CDSA charges, with 11 for drug trafficking and five for possession, compared to 21 to start 2025.
Thirteen Criminal Code traffic charges were laid in August, with 11 for impaired/exceed-related offences, one for impairment by drug and one for dangerous driving and other, compared to 11 in August 2025. So far this year, the EPS has had 83 such charges, with 57 for impaired/exceed, 20 for impairment by drug and six for dangerous driving. Sixty-five were laid through Aug. 31, 2025.
The EPS handled 540 calls for service in August, down from 613 in the same month the previous year. There were 5,277 calls for service for the first eight months of the year, an 11.7 per cent increase from 4,723 for the same time period in 2025.
The five-year average is 5,017 calls for service, a 5.2 per cent increase. The five-year average is 110 crimes against the person, 276.20 property crimes, 80 Criminal Code traffic violations and 22 CDSA charges.
