REGINA, Sask. — About 24,000 Regina addresses are set to lose door-to-door mail delivery in 2027 as Canada Post expands its shift to community mailboxes.
On Sept. 16, Canada Post notified Regina officials and affected employees that some neighbourhoods in Regina with postal codes starting with S4N, S4S and S4V will see door-to-door delivery reduced and converted to community mailboxes.
Saskatoon will also be affected, with approximately 21,000 addresses in postal code areas beginning with S7L and S7M scheduled to move from door-to-door delivery to community mailboxes in 2027.
This is part of a nationwide conversion from door-to-door delivery to community mailboxes, taking place later this year and into 2027. The conversion will affect 55 communities across Canada.
Canada Post says it intends to keep Regina residents up to speed on the conversion schedule as it plays out.
"We will continue to keep residents and local officials informed every step of the way," Canada Post said in its statement.
Regina residents have had mixed reactions to this news, with divided opinions even within families.
Longtime postal customer Celeste Schwartz thinks reduced door-to-door delivery will be an adjustment for residents, but overall it will be worth the change.
"I think we'll get used to it — going just around the corner to a box. Sometimes you meet your neighbours, collecting mail together. I think it will save us a lot of money anyways," says Celeste.
Celeste's husband, Glenn, takes a more critical view of Canada Post's decision but agrees with his wife that the post office "has to save money."
"The one issue that is a bit of a problem is people who are home-bound who can't get out to get their mail. I don't know the solution to that, but the post office has to become more efficient," says Glenn.
Another longtime postal customer in Regina, Geri Daku, worries about the future of employees at Canada Post.
"I would think people are going to lose their jobs — the carriers are — and I feel kind of bad about that. I'd like to have my mail delivered to my door," says Daku.
