The Yorkton Terriers had plenty to celebrate Saturday night, raising their 2025-26 Bunge Division championship banner before opening the new SJHL season with a convincing 6-2 win over the Estevan Bruins at Westland Insurance Arena.
Tyson Medernach got the Terriers on the board first, scoring his first SJHL goal on the power play in the opening period. Yorkton also killed off both Estevan power-play opportunities in the first and carried a 12-6 edge in shots into the intermission.
Brett Buckley made it 2-0 early in the second before Austin Horbachewsky extended the lead to three just over four minutes into the period.
Horbachewsky's shorthanded goal came after Jake Briltz forced a turnover at centre ice, sending Horbachewsky in alone on a breakaway.
The Bruins answered later in the period on a goal from Gunner Moore before Lochlan Teteranko scored just 58 seconds into the third, suddenly making it a one-goal game.
That was as close as Estevan would get.
Mathys Morrissette restored Yorkton's two-goal advantage with his first career SJHL goal before Horbachewsky added his second of the night. Briltz then capped the scoring late in the third.
Horbachewsky finished with two goals and an assist, while Briltz had a goal and an assist. Nathan Ramos recorded two primary assists, with five Terriers finishing the night with multi-point games.
Callum Creig stopped 25 of 27 shots to earn the win.
The Terriers now hit the road for three straight games, beginning Tuesday against the Warman Wolverines.
Red Wings Answer Back Against Mils
The Weyburn Red Wings responded from Friday's 4-2 loss to Melville, defeating the Millionaires 4-1 Saturday night to split the opening-weekend home-and-home series.
After a scoreless first period, Hayden Iron Shirt opened the scoring in the second.
Melville answered before the period was over, with Kale Margolis finding the back of the net to tie the game.
The Red Wings regained the lead in the third before Trennen Redlick continued his strong opening weekend. Redlick scored his second of the season and added an assist, giving him four points through the first two games.
Weyburn added another late goal to pull away for the 4-1 victory.
Ethan Berard was strong in the Weyburn net, stopping 28 of 29 shots to earn his first career SJHL win.
The Mils and Red Wings split the weekend series, with each team winning on the other's home ice.
North Stars Down Hawks
The Battlefords North Stars picked up their first win of the season with a 4-1 victory over the Nipawin Hawks.
Drew Williamson broke a 1-1 tie on a one-timer off the rush during a North Stars power play. Finlay Klippenstein and Linken Fisher both finished with multi-point games, while Raydr Wallington scored Nipawin's lone goal.
Ice Wolves Knock Off Mustangs
The La Ronge Ice Wolves handed the Melfort Mustangs their first loss of the season, coming away with a 5-2 victory at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre.
Everett Merchant and Dru Mushumanski both had multi-point games in the matchup between two early-season scoring leaders.
Knox Bendera scored the eventual game-winner in the second period as La Ronge pulled away.
Wolverines Spoil Humboldt Home Opener
Warman spoiled Humboldt's home opener with a 5-4 victory over the Broncos.
Luke Brunen made 36 saves to backstop the Wolverines, while Ethan Dundas and recently acquired defencemen Jordan Blanchette and Theron Bensler each recorded multi-point games.
Warman also held Humboldt to just one goal on 10 power-play opportunities
