Established under the federal Experimental Farm Station Act of 1886, the Indian Head Experimental Farm officially opened in 1887 as one of Canada's original five agricultural research stations. Designed to guide incoming homesteaders, the station pioneered critical dryland cultivation techniques and evaluated new crop and livestock varieties to conquer the harsh prairie climate. It became an absolute lifeline for the region, famously developing vital soil-reclamation strategies to combat devastating dust storms during the 1930s Depression.
