The Indian Head Tree Nursery was established by the federal government in 1901 to transform and protect the windswept Canadian prairies. Known for decades as the PFRA Shelterbelt Centre, this extraordinary facility grew and distributed over 610 million hardy tree and shrub seedlings completely free of charge to farmers across Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Alberta to create vital windbreaks and combat soil erosion. Though the federal government shuttered the historic program in 2013, its monumental green legacy lives on in the thousands of lush, dense shelterbelts that still line farmyards and fields today. The historic 640-acre site was later acquired by the Carry the Kettle Nakoda Nation, which has looked to revitalize the property into a multi-use cultural and agricultural space.
