After more than two decades helping build baseball in Regina, Gary Brotzel is retiring from his role as general manager of the Regina Red Sox.
Brotzel, a founding member of the organization, has been part of the Red Sox leadership since the team returned to the Western Canadian Baseball League in 2005. He helped establish the community-owned, not-for-profit organization and was instrumental in its three WCBL championships in 2011, 2012 and 2025.
“It is difficult to put into words what the Red Sox and the baseball community in Regina have meant to me over the past 20-plus years,” Brotzel said in a statement. “When we brought the Red Sox back in 2005, we wanted to build something that belonged to the community, and I am incredibly proud of what this organization has become.”
Brotzel’s contributions have been recognized with inductions into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame and Regina Sports Hall of Fame.
Mitch MacDonald will take over as GM for the 2027 season after serving as assistant general manager.
MacDonald has been part of the Red Sox for nearly two decades as a player, coach, and member of management. He remains the only player in WCBL history to win the Triple Crown and was part of three championship teams.
“Mitch has been a part of the Red Sox family for nearly two decades, and there are very few people who understand this organization and the game of baseball at the level he does,” Red Sox CEO Gordon Pritchard said in a statement.
MacDonald will oversee baseball operations heading into the 2027 WCBL season.
