ESTEVAN, Sask. — The Estevan Police Service (EPS) made arrests for an assault and unlawfully being in a residence during the weekend.
A report of a domestic disturbance in the back alley of the 600-block of Fourth Street was investigated during the Sept. 26 night shift. Two related individuals were located in the area and the EPS said it was determined that an assault had taken place. The man involved was arrested for assault and was to be released on conditions in front of a justice of the peace.
Meanwhile, following a report of individuals squatting at a residence in central Estevan, the EPS said members located an Estevan man in the building on Sept. 27 who had no permission to be there. He was arrested for being unlawfully in a dwelling house and for breaching a probation order. He was subsequently released with a future court date to speak to the matter.
The EPS received a report Sept. 24 of a suspicious backpack left unattended in the Hillcrest area. The EPS said the complainant brought the contents, including a syringe and possible drugs, to the police service for destruction. Police remind the public of the dangers of coming into contact with illicit drugs and paraphernalia, and recommend not touching suspicious items, but rather reporting them to the EPS or Estevan Fire Rescue Service to be dealt with safely.
EPS patrol members and the Police and Crisis Team (PACT) assisted a Regina man who was experiencing a mental health crisis to connect with community resources and medical care during the night shift.
A report of a suspicious vehicle, located in west valley edge area, was investigated by the EPS. Members attended, the EPS said, spoke with the occupants of the vehicle and determined that the vehicle had experienced mechanical issues. They were waiting on a tow truck to remove them from the area. No further police involvement was needed.
Police received a report Sept. 25 of a mischief to a vehicle that was covered in flour, eggs and barbecue sauce while parked in a northeast business parking lot. The EPS said the matter remains under investigation.
Members received multiple calls regarding four young children who were reportedly unsupervised on the east end of Fourth Street. The EPS said the children were reported to have placed items on the road for vehicles to drive over before running away. Police located the children alone in a nearby hotel room and determined their babysitter was present but was not directly supervising them. All those involved were cautioned about their actions and the matter was forwarded to the Ministry of Social Services for additional follow-up.
The owners of a local business reported concerns involving a former customer who had posted on social media about a dispute over cancelled membership fees. The EPS said officers reviewed the circumstances and determined the matter was civil in nature and the content of the social media posts did not constitute a criminal offence.
Police received a report of a stolen license plate from a truck parked in an Estevan alley. The EPS said an investigation determined a different licence plate had been placed on the vehicle that was registered to a stolen truck from Weyburn. The stolen plate was recovered and the EPS said the theft of the complainant’s licence plate remains under investigation.
The EPS is investigating a reported fraudulent purchase of two barbecues valued at approximately $8,214. According to the EPS, the purchaser took possession of the barbecues and subsequently disputed the credit card transactions with their bank, resulting in the business not receiving payment. Police obtained CCTV footage and the investigation into the matter is ongoing.
The EPS received two separate reports of gas drive-offs from a local gas station. In one incident, the EPS said police contacted the registered owner of the vehicle, who advised that the failure to pay was accidental and agreed to return to the business to make payment. The EPS reported the second incident is believed to have been an intentional drive-off without paying for fuel. Surveillance video from the business has been obtained and the matter remains under investigation.
A report of a man passed out on Second Street resulted in his arrest for public intoxication. As he was unable to care for himself, the EPS said he was lodged in cells, to be released when sober.
The EPS said it responded to a report Sept. 26 of a small brown pitbull outside of a residence. The owner later attended the residence and retrieved the dog.
Police received a report of a missing dog, described as a terrier with white and brown colouring. As of shift change, the dog had not been located.
A complaint of criminal harassment occurring between two former partners was investigated and determined to not be criminal in nature. The EPS said the complainant was provided advice regarding the situation and no further police involvement was required.
EPS members responded to a report of a collision generated through a digital device's automated system. GPS co-ordinates were provided for the incident location. The EPS said police attended the scene and determined a collision had not occurred and that a cellular device had malfunctioned.
EPS and Estevan Fire Rescue Service members responded to a report of a fire alarm sounding at a residence. The EPS said no fire was located and the residence appeared to be abandoned.
The EPS said a 21-day roadside driver's licence suspension and vehicle impoundment were issued to a motorist during the night shift following an impaired driving investigation during a traffic stop.
EPS members attended to a residence in the Hillside area Sept. 27, as two siblings were involved in an argument. Police mediated the situation and the two parties agreed to remain apart in separate buildings on the property. No further calls for service to the residence were received during the rest of the shift.
