SASKATOON, Sask. – After an early Sask Party head start in nominations, the opposition New Democrats have begun the nomination process for the fall 2028 provincial vote.
At a nomination meeting in Saskatoon Fairview the party announced that their incumbent Vicki Mowat has been nominated as their first Saskatchewan NDP candidate in place for the next election.
Mowat had held the seat since a 2017 byelection and is currently Deputy Leader in the legislature. In addition to being the first NDP candidate nominated for 2028, she is also the first member of the NDP caucus officially confirmed to be running for re-election.
"Over the past nine years, it has been the honor of a lifetime to work for the people of Saskatoon Fairview, and I want to thank all my constituents for their continued support, and the opportunity to represent you in the legislature once again," Mowat said in a news release.
“Still, the work is just beginning. We hear from people every day who want to see change in Saskatchewan — better healthcare, more affordable living, safer communities and so much more — and I am so excited to deliver for them when we form the next government under the incredible leadership of Saskatchewan’s first woman Premier, Carla Beck.”
“Vicki Mowat is the model of perseverance and hard work — she embodies so much of what makes Saskatchewan people incredible,” said NDP Leader Carla Beck in a statement.
“She works so hard for everyday people, pressing for action to make their lives more affordable and to ensure they have a home to call their own. Vicki has fought so hard against the devastation in healthcare caused by the Sask. Party that has taken us from first to last. She will play a pivotal role in the Saskatchewan NDP Government as we hit the ground running on Day One to deliver the change people are looking for.”
While this nomination puts the NDP on the board, it still has some catching up to do in terms of selecting candidates for the next election. The Sask Party currently has eight candidates in place including the leader, Scott Moe, in Rosthern-Shellbrook.
The NDP says their next nomination meeting will be in the constituency of Saskatoon Churchill Wildwood. That seat is currently held by the party’s first-term incumbent Keith Jorgenson.
