FOAM LAKE, Sask. — Three people have died and four more suffered injuries after a collision in east-central Saskatchewan.
According to a news release from the Saskatchewan RCMP, on Oct. 2 at around 12:35 p.m., Wadena/Foam Lake RCMP received a report of a collision on a grid road approximately nine kilometres west of Foam Lake.
Officers responded, along with fire, EMS and STARS Air Ambulance crews.
The RCMP said an investigation determined a truck collided with an SUV while it was attempting to pass a semi.
The RCMP added three occupants of the SUV – the driver and two passengers – were declared dead by EMS at the scene. They have been identified as a 40-year-old woman, an eight-year-old girl and a five -year-old girl, all from Foam Lake. A man who was a passenger in the SUV was taken to hospital by STARS with injuries described by the RCMP as serious in nature.
The driver of the truck was taken to the hospital with injuries described by the RCMP as non-life-threatening in nature. There were two passengers in the truck. Both were taken to the hospital, one by EMS with injuries described by the RCMP as non-life-threatening in nature and one by STARS with injuries described as serious in nature.
The semi was not damaged, the RCMP said, and the driver did not report any physical injuries to police.
As a result of an investigation, the RCMP said 40-year-old Kelly Knopf from Sumter, S.C. was arrested and charged with three counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and three counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm.
He is scheduled to appear in Yorkton Provincial Court on Oct. 5.
