REGINA, Sask. — Elon Musk’s suggestion on social media that Saskatchewan and Alberta split from Canada is getting firm pushback from both provinces’ premiers.
In posts on the X platform responding to news that Quebec premier-designate Paul St-Pierre Plamondon declared his dream of Quebec independence “will be realized one day,” Musk posted: “Good. Quebec should separate.”
In a second post, Musk added: “They would be better off. Alberta and Saskatchewan should separate too.”
That drew this response on X from Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe: “No.”
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has also issued a statement in response to Musk’s post, saying she strongly disagreed with his opinion. Alberta is currently facing an Oct. 19 vote on whether the province should remain in Canada or begin the process toward a binding referendum on separation.
Musk’s post drew a flood of reactions on social media, both for and against.
Pro-separation account Alberta Independence welcomed the comments on X, posting: “Elon Musk is the wealthiest person in history – An industrialist, tech mogul and the world's first Trillionaire – He will forever be remembered as one of mankind’s most brilliant minds – Elon thinks Alberta and Saskatchewan should Separate from Canada – We Agree.”
Former Alberta premier Jason Kenney had a far different reaction. He posted on X that if Musk “still holds Canadian citizenship, the only honourable thing for him to do is to renounce it.”
