Saskatchewan students pursuing a post-secondary education related to agriculture can now apply for the 2027 Agriculture Student Scholarship.
There is a total of four scholarships up for grabs, valued at $15,000, including the top scholarship of $6,000 and three runner-up scholarships of $3,000 each.
The main part of the application is submitting a 1,000 word essay or a creative three-minute video on how a student would address any issue facing the agriculture industry today, from technological innovation to public engagement.
Bryce Lewans, a Public Trust Specialist with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture, said evaluators will be looking at the usual things such as structure, clarity, and citations in each submission.
Students have creative freedom to express how they would go about addressing an issue of their choice, but there are other aspects evaluators will look for.
" Building public trust in the sector is a very important thing that we consider," Lewans said. "A nother thing is that we really place a high amount of value in submissions where the student speaks to their own leadership development in the sector and the specific things that they've done or want to do in the future. So we really take a look at kind of that leadership side of things and to hear that in their own voice from personal experience."
Using A.I. is allowed but it has to be disclosed in the application, he said.
"If they do use an A.I. tool, they have to declare what specific tool they have used, the exact prompts that they used when using the tool, and then most importantly, how they went about verifying that the information was accurate and providing an explanation of that." Lewans explained.
Grade 12 students or recent high school graduates from the past two school years – 2025, 2026, or 2027 – living in Saskatchewan and planning to take agriculture-related post-secondary education in the fall of 2027 can apply.
The application and instructions on how to submit it are online at saskatchewan.ca/ag-scholarship.
The deadline to apply is March 1st, 2027, but Lewans said the sooner, the better.
The Ag Student Scholarship is funded by the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP).
