REGINA, Sask. – Aspiring university students got a chance to find out what could be in store for them at the University of Regina’s fall open house.
The event took place Friday at the university. Over 1,000 interested students, parents and guidance counsellors were on hand for the activities that day.
Those included campus tours, a look at housing, information sessions, and the Campus Expo where the students could meet representatives of the various faculties about what they offer. U of R President Jeff Keshen also gave a welcoming address to those in attendance.
One unique feature of the day was an opportunity for students to apply for admission on the spot to the program they are interested in, and find out if they are accepted that same day.
University of Regina Recruitment Coordinator Katelyn Major said they are “really lucky at the U of R that we're able to work very closely with our admissions team and our recruitment teams and lots of teams around the university to offer grade 12 prospective students conditional admission to come to the University of Regina.”
”It gives them a really great way to start their future and learn to expect what to expect throughout the year and get ready for their next steps.”
An open house like this one is an intensive effort to get organized, with planning happening a year in advance, said Major.
“We want students to feel really comfortable with the University of Regina,” she said. “We want them to see themselves here to understand and feel the pulse of what campus is like and to see the high quality education that we offer here at the U of R.”
As for what kind of questions students typically have about the university, Major said they were about “anything and everything.”
”We have questions, yes, about student awards, financial aid, about admission requirements, about what to expect in careers or professional programs after they're done an undergraduate degree or undergraduate programs themselves. So we get to a little bit of everything. We're always excited to hear what students have to ask and we're always prepared.”
