REGINA, Sask. — Regina residents may have seen an extra amount of aircraft activity above them Friday evening, and it is set to continue for Saturday evening as well.
15 Wing of Moose Jaw is conducting flying training in the vicinity of Regina on Friday and Saturday between 6:30 p.m. and midnight.
According to a release from 15 Wing Moose Jaw, flights will be conducted by 2 Canadian Forces Flying Training School with two CT-156 Harvard II, advanced turboprop training aircraft, with landings and take-offs from Regina International Airport. The CT-156 Harvard II can fly up to 575 km/h.
"Flying in a different operating airspace is an essential component for military pilot training and helps student pilots develop their flying proficiencies. 15 Wing endeavours to be respectful and mindful of communities and will take measures to minimize the potential noise impact," stated the release.
According to the Royal Canadian Air Force, 2 Canadian Forces Flying Training School (2 CFFTS) is the centre of pilot training in Canada's Air Force.
Also known as the "Big 2," 2 CFFTS trains over 150 pilots every year through the NATO Flying Training in Canada (NFTC) program.
The Big 2 is also home to the Flying Instruction and Standards Section (FIS), the unit responsible for training military flying instructors.
