REGINA, Sask. — With colder weather approaching, Regina construction crews are racing to finish exterior work and protect buildings from water intrusion before winter sets in.
Patrick Coulthard, assistant deputy minister of infrastructure at SaskBuilds, said crews are making the most of the remaining warm weather before shifting their focus indoors during the colder months.
A major priority, he said, is making sure buildings are sealed against moisture before temperatures drop.
“Whether it’s windows or sealing of roof membranes or roof structures – making sure that there’s no ability for water intrusion is really kind of a large focus,” he said.
Darryl Michel, a general contractor with Michel Construction, said his company is on track to seal up its exterior projects before winter. However, he said some contractors in Regina are facing delays.
“The only people I hear are behind right now are the roofers. Roofers are a little bit behind because of all the hail damage we’ve had in the last six months or so,” Michel said.
Michael Fiddler, regional operations manager at Atlas-Apex Roofing, said his company has experienced some setbacks, including a heavy downpour in early September that delayed work by about a month.
Fiddler said Atlas-Apex brought in additional workers to help mitigate the impact of the rain and remains on track with most of its projects.
“Our goal is to get things wrapped up as much as possible, but we are not seasonal. We work straight through the winter months so [winter] doesn’t affect us too much,” Fiddler said.
While construction crews are working to complete exterior projects before temperatures drop, Fiddler said roofing work will continue through the winter as contractors work to keep projects moving.
