SWIFT CURRENT, Sask. — Regina horror author K.D. Kulpa will bring tales of the supernatural to Swift Current when she appears at Write Out Loud on Oct. 21.
Kulpa is the author of the supernatural horror novel Coma and has also written short stories exploring the paranormal and the darker side of fiction. She is also the host of the Saskatchewan-based ParaGhoul Paranormal podcast and a co-ghost guide with YQR Haunts in Regina.
Kulpa said her interest in the paranormal stretches back to her childhood in Nipawin, where she grew up in a house she describes as haunted.
“I think growing up with something that is not supposed to be there, it always made me interested in the side world of the paranormal,” she said. “And then I also got into Stephen King and Anne Rice and cheesy horror movies that were very frequent back then.”
Kulpa began writing seriously in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic suddenly changed her normally busy life as a mother of three.
“That was one good thing that came out of COVID times for me,” she said. “As a mom of three, suddenly I went from being busy all the time to not being able to leave the house.”
Writing became an escape, with authors such as Stephen King serving as inspiration, she said.
Since then, Kulpa has continued developing her fiction, including Coma, her debut supernatural horror novel.
The book centres on a man who is hit by a car and becomes detached from his body while something supernatural attempts to reach him.
More recently, Kulpa said she has turned some of her attention to short fiction.
“I will have a short story coming out here in the Saskatchewan Screams Again anthology book this month, and I have another coming out hopefully in November,” she said.
Her story for Saskatchewan Screams Again, an anthology featuring Saskatchewan authors, is set in a hotel in Robsart and involves a couple staying there.
Kulpa plans to share some of her work during her Write Out Loud appearance, including a reading from Coma.
“That’s kind of why they had me come out,” she said. “I also plan on bringing out my short story that was released this month. So that is what I’m focused on.”
Kulpa’s interest in the supernatural extends beyond fiction.
She hosts ParaGhoul Paranormal, a podcast focused on hauntings and the history behind them. The program began as a weekly radio show on a Regina community radio station before moving to the podcast format.
Kulpa is also involved with YQR Haunts: Ghost Tour of Regina and works as a public speaker.
Her appearance at Write Out Loud will take place Oct. 21. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the program beginning at 7 p.m. Admission is $10 at the door.
