REGINA, Sask. — Saskatchewan is marking Waste Reduction Week from Oct. 19 to 25, urging residents to recycle, reuse and compost to keep waste out of landfills.
The Government of Saskatchewan is recognizing Waste Reduction Week by highlighting the importance of reducing waste and making better use of resources to support a sustainable future.
“On average, about half of the materials placed in garbage bins can be diverted through recycling, composting and other waste reduction programs,” Environment Minister Darlene Rowden said.
“Waste Reduction Week is a great time to remember that even small, everyday actions can make a big difference in helping keep materials out of our landfills.”
Reducing waste can extend the life of existing landfills, lower the need for costly expansions and reduce the risk of fires and environmental damage caused by hazardous waste seepage.
The Saskatchewan Waste Reduction Council (SWRC) is among the partners working with the province to promote waste reduction.
“Building a more waste-free Saskatchewan takes all of us,” SWRC Executive Director Naomi Mihilewicz said.
“We are pleased to work with the Ministry of Environment and communities across the province to help make waste prevention, reuse and recycling easier and more accessible in our everyday lives.”
Residents can reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills by repairing, repurposing or reusing items, donating or selling unwanted clothing and furniture, composting food scraps and yard waste, and recycling accepted materials such as paper, cardboard, containers, electronics, batteries and paint.
The SWRC’s Waste Reduction Hub offers information about local recycling and disposal options for common household items.
Waste reduction is also a long-term provincial priority. Under Saskatchewan’s Solid Waste Management Strategy, the province aims to reduce waste generated per person by 30 per cent by 2030 and 50 per cent by 2040, compared with 2014 levels.
The strategy supports Saskatchewan’s Growth Plan, which emphasizes sustainability and responsible resource management.
