MOOSE JAW, Sask. — Kyra Ferguson marked her September birthday by helping others celebrate theirs, putting together 32 birthday bags for clients of the Moose Jaw and District Food Bank.
Her thoughtful gesture prompted a belated birthday wish and a public thank-you in a social media post on the food bank’s page.
“Birthdays are usually about receiving gifts, but for Kyra Ferguson, her birthday was an opportunity to give back,” the post reads.
According to the tribute, Ferguson wanted to mark her birthday by doing something meaningful for clients. The bags were her way of sharing some birthday cheer with people facing difficult circumstances.
The thank-you also highlighted what a birthday surprise can mean beyond the gift itself: a reminder that someone’s special day deserves recognition, even when life is difficult.
“For someone facing a difficult time, a simple birthday surprise can mean so much. It’s a reminder that they are remembered, valued, and deserving of celebration,” the post says.
Ferguson’s birthday bags are one of the many ways residents can support the food bank, which has served Moose Jaw and the surrounding district since 1984.
Its work includes helping people access nutritious food and collecting and distributing surplus food that might otherwise go to waste. Volunteers sort donations, pack hampers and welcome visitors.
Community donations and volunteer support help sustain those efforts. Residents can contribute food, make one-time or monthly financial gifts, volunteer or organize a fundraiser.
Those with a fundraising idea can contact staff for guidance before getting started or to arrange delivery of their contribution afterward.
Food donations can be dropped off at the loading bay at 270 Fairford Street West, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., excluding statutory holidays. Items should be unopened and within their expiry date.
