ESTEVAN, Sask. — A collision, thefts and a drug possession arrest were among recent calls for members of the Estevan Police Service (EPS).
The EPS responded to a collision involving two pickup trucks at the intersection of Kensington Avenue and Devonian Street during the Oct. 26 day shift. The EPS said vehicle owners exchanged information prior to police arrival, but one motorist informed police he thought the other driver might be impaired.
A separate traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle shortly after it left the collision scene, and the driver passed a roadside screening test, the EPS said. No signs of impairment were noted by officers, and the driver was sent on his way after confirming that all necessary information had been exchanged between the parties.
Police attended a residence to assist with keeping the peace while one individual removed her belongings from the property. The EPS said she expressed concerns that some of her items might have been withheld and was advised to file a report if she believed anything was missing.
The EPS received reports regarding the theft of a green BMX bicycle and an Android cellphone from the same complainant. Individuals were identified as potential suspects in the separate incidents, and both investigations are ongoing.
Police received a request for assistance regarding a trailer that was left at a local business after a group of hunters from the U.S. experienced mechanical issues on their way home. The EPS said the hunters asked a local resident to transport bags of duck and goose decoys to the U.S., which led to concerns that contraband might be concealed among the decoys. Police service dog Max searched the items and gave no indication that drugs were present.
Police responded to a request for assistance from EMS regarding a suicidal individual at a residence who was reportedly in possession of a knife before EMS arrived. Following discussion with EMS, the individual agreed to attend hospital voluntarily with them. The EPS said members of the Police and Crisis Team followed up with the person later in the day to provide additional support and resources.
A report of a possible structure fire at a residence in the Hillside area was received. The EPS and Estevan Fire Rescue Service personnel attended, the EPS said, and determined that the report was unfounded.
Police conducted curfew checks on several individuals bound by court-ordered conditions during the night shift. All were found to be at their approved residences and in compliance.
A report of a man checking doors at a business in east Estevan was received Oct. 27. The EPS said the individual, who is known to police, was located and cautioned about his observed actions. A trespass notice from the business will be served at a later date.
The theft of a jacket from a vehicle was reported during the day shift. The matter remains under investigation, and the EPS said a suspect has been identified.
Multiple curfew checks were conducted during the night shift on individuals bound by court-ordered conditions. Two searches of residences were conducted during these checks as authorized by the occupants' respective conditions. In one instance, a significant amount of methamphetamine was located. The 30-year-old man was subsequently arrested for possession of drugs and breaching his conditions, and was lodged in cells to appear in court the following day to speak to the charges.
