WEYBURN, Sask. — The Weyburn Police Service (WPS) responded to 88 calls for service during the week of Oct. 25-Nov. 1.
The WPS said no major issues occurred on Halloween as favourable weather provided an enjoyable evening for trick-or-treaters. Police patrolled throughout the community.
Police responded to an early-morning report of a suspicious man banging on the doors of the Weyburn RCMP detachment last week. Officers located him and determined he was intoxicated. The WPS said he was belligerent, argumentative and not co-operative with police. The man was arrested for public intoxication and held in police cells until sober.
On Oct. 30, police received numerous reports of intoxicated youths in public. The WPS said officers located two 16-year-old boys who were heavily intoxicated. For their safety and well-being, both were arrested and released to their parents.
In addition to routine patrols around local drinking establishments, police responded to several reports of disturbances inside and outside the premises. All incidents were resolved without further issues, the WPS said. Disputes de-escalated and those involved were directed to return home. Police also investigated complaints of underage drinking. All establishments checked were found to be compliant.
The WPS reminds motorists to use extra caution when driving in fog. Visibility can change quickly, making it difficult to see other vehicles, pedestrians and hazards, the WPS said. Motorists are urged to:
- Reduce speed to stop safely within the distance you can see;
- Turn on low-beam headlights and ensure taillights are illuminated. Daytime running lights may not activate taillights;
- Avoid high beams, which reflect off fog and make it harder to see;
- Increase following distance and avoid sudden braking or unnecessary passing.
- Keep windows clear using windshield wipers and defroster;
- If visibility becomes too poor to continue, pull into a safe location completely off the roadway and wait for conditions to improve;
- Allow extra travel time and postpone unnecessary trips during dense fog. Getting to a destination safely is the priority.
