ONION LAKE CREE NATION – Two people have been charged after a stolen vehicle evaded police.
On Feb. 20 at approximately 10:45 a.m., Onion Lake RCMP received a report of a suspicious person outside a home on Onion Lake Cree Nation. It was reported that an individual in a truck attended the residential property and broke the window of a vehicle parked outside.
Onion Lake RCMP responded and located a truck matching the suspect vehicle’s description. Officers activated their vehicle’s emergency equipment and initiated a traffic stop. The truck did not stop for police, fleeing at a high rate of speed.
Onion Lake RCMP asked nearby RCMP detachments and the Onion Lake Fire Rescue Peacekeepers to be on the lookout for the truck.
At approximately 2 p.m., Maidstone RCMP located a vehicle matching the truck’s description on Highway 3, heading west towards Highway 17. Officers initiated a traffic stop and the vehicle once again fled at high speeds, heading back towards the Onion Lake area.
Later that same day, Onion Lake was notified by the Onion Lake Fire Rescue Peacekeepers that the truck was parked outside a residence. Officers attended the residence and arrested three individuals. The investigation determined that the truck was previously reported as stolen from Two Hills, Alta. The licence plate on the vehicle had also been reported as stolen.
As a result of the continued investigation by Onion Lake RCMP and Maidstone RCMP, a 24-year-old suspect, from Onion Lake, is charged with:
- one count, flight from peace officer;
- one count, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000; and
- one count, possession of property obtained by crime less than $5,000.
The accused is scheduled to appear in Lloydminster Provincial Court on April 1.
A 27-year-old suspect, from Onion Lake, was charged with the same offences. He appeared in court on March 5. He pled guilty to the flight from police charge and received a sentence of 161 days in custody and a year of probation. His other charges were withdrawn.
The third individual arrested was released without charges.
