NORTH PORTAL — The Estevan RCMP, in partnership with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), has charged a man after opium was seized at the North Portal border crossing.
According to a news release from the Saskatchewan RCMP, on March 4, following a search, the CBSA determined a man trying to enter Canada at North Portal was in possession of approximately 67 grams of opium. The CBSA reportedly contacted the Estevan RCMP to continue the criminal investigation.
As a result of continued investigation, the Estevan RCMP charged 53-year-old Iqbal Kahlon from Brampton, Ont., with one count of unlawfully importing a Schedule 1 substance (opium) under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, and one count of smuggling or attempting to smuggle goods to Canada under the Customs Act.
Kahlon is scheduled to appear in Estevan Provincial Court on March 20
