March is ag literacy month and Saskatchewanians of all ages know the importance of agriculture in this province. Not only does it create a direct or indirect living for thousands of families, it also serves has inspiration for books for both adults and kids.
Rob Swallow, originally of Windthorst, Saskatchewan, has released a book about life on the farm titled “Boo and the Boy: The Coyote Encounter,” which is based on a true story.
“When I was about four or five years old I was going out for a little walk with my dog and went up to the corrals and the barn and my dog Boo started barking at the barn door, so I go to investigate, I open the barn door a little bit, I look inside, and there’s this coyote sick with mange,” explained Swallow.
For those who may not know, mange is an often fatal disease in coyotes which causes hair loss resulting in an animal freezing during winter. The disease is treatable in animals that are tame.
“This story just started with me telling my kids at bedtime. They’d be asking ‘Dad tell me a story about when you were young,’ and this one of the stories I would tell them at night.”
Swallow self published the book on Amazon and is expecting to have more books released to the online site in the future.
“I have another book that’s going to be published right away here too called “Boo and the Boy: Lost in the Bales,” stated Swallow. “This one is the experience of jumping across round bales in the winter time and then slipping and falling in between and, again, being four or five years old, and being scared and not sure how to get out of there. My dog Boo came and found me.”
