WEYBURN — Following the arrest of Brandon Hendershot and the associated lengthy standoff, the Weyburn Police Service (WPS) is reminding residents about the SaskAlert App.
According to the weekly report from the WPS, anyone with a smartphone is encouraged to download the app and enable notifications. The app provides important alerts from police, Environment Canada, municipalities and rural municipalities when urgent information needs to be shared with the public.
Hendershot was arrested at a residence in the 800-block of Fifth Street North in the evening of March 11, after a dangerous person warning was issued on SaskAlert. Those who reside in the affected area were urged to shelter in place.
The WPS says Hendershot has been returned to Nova Scotia to face charges in that province and no charges have been laid against him in Weyburn at this time.
Also on March 11, police responded to a report of an oilfield maintenance truck on fire near Third Street and Highway 39. Upon arrival, the WPS said officers found the truck fully engulfed in flames. Police assisted with traffic control until the Weyburn Fire Department extinguished the blaze. The WPS said no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is unknown, but the WPS said it is not considered suspicious.
The following day, police responded to a report of a downed streetlight at the intersection of Highway 13 and the North Weyburn turn. Upon arrival, the WPS said officers located a truck in the ditch after it had struck a light post with an attached stop sign. Police provided traffic control until the scene was cleared. The WPS said road conditions were a factor in the collision. No injuries were reported.
On March 14, police were called to a residence regarding an unwanted man. Upon arrival, officers located what the WPS described as a very aggressive and verbally abusive man in the basement. The man was arrested and forcibly resisted arrest. Officers gained control of the individual and lodged him in cells. He was later released once he had calmed down. The WPS said drugs and alcohol were believed to be factors, and the man has been charged with resisting arrest. The investigation is ongoing.
In the early afternoon of March 14, police received a complaint through the Report Impaired Drivers (RID) line of a truck speeding and weaving in and out of traffic while entering the city. Police located the vehicle in front of a local business and conducted a traffic stop. The driver was found to be impaired by alcohol. A man was arrested and later released for operating a conveyance over the legal limit.
The WPS had 66 calls for service from March 8-15, including numerous domestic disputes throughout the week, and assisted in mediating family-related issues. Officers additionally responded to a high number of mental health-related calls, where several individuals required transport to hospital for further care.
