For new parents, one of the most difficult jobs is trying to come up with a name for the baby. Sometimes names come real easy but, often, finding a name both mom and dad agree on can be quite challenging. Many parents want something new, fresh, and unique, however some still prefer those traditional names out there like William, Liam, Olivia, and Emily.
Stats Canada has released their list of the most unique baby names from the past year and some of these names reflect the changing face of Canadian society, while others are just simply one of a kind.
For the girls, some older names have started to resurface like Veronica, Vera, Lola, Lila, Allison, and Francesca, but there were some very unusual girls names as well. These included Amanat, Yursa, Arnaaz, Rayna, Scotia, Harleen, Jasleen, Lovely, Sequoia, Wednesday, Queen, Moon, Dove, Diva, and Sutton.
For the boys, names like Braxton, Winston, Brayden, and Ace have started making a small comeback, but there were several unique names given out as well over the past year. Among these are Mustafa, Louka, Auguste, Aveer, Killian, Wolf, Storm, Kush, Stoke, North, Lyon, and Kale.
Stats Canada says over six thousand unique names were given out in 2024 and early 2025. What makes these names unique is that they were given to less than one hundred babies in 2024 and in some cases, these names were used less than ten times making them very rare and unique. In comparison, the most popular names were given over a one thousand times in the year.
