REGINA — Regina police are reminding the public to be vigilant following a recent telephone scam that saw a Regina victim defrauded of nearly $5,000. The scam involved telephone conversations with different people claiming to be from various organizations, including the Regina Police Service.
The victim received an initial call from someone who claimed they were with Canda Post and they were holding a package belonging to the victim for security reasons. The caller then offered to connect the victim with CSIS and the Regina Police to further confirm the details. The victim received two calls from people claiming to be from these agencies.
The Regina Police Service phone number (306-777-6500) was spoofed to appear legitimate.
Following the calls, the victim was instructed to deposit cash into a bitcoin machine in the south end of Regina.
The caller then asked the victim to complete the same task a second time. At this time, the victim became suspicious and reported the occurrence to police.
The Regina Police Service reminds citizens to stay vigilant and to remember the following:
- Organizations such as police, banks, governments (CRA), Canada Post will never ask you to withdraw money to resolve “trouble”.
- Never share personal information during an unsolicited call and do not be afraid to say no and hang up.
- Avoid sending money to anyone you do not know.
If you believe you are a victim or suspect someone is trying to defraud you, contact police immediately at 306-777-6500. Please call 911 if it is an emergency.
