REGINA — A row of colourful, handcrafted playhouses drew crowds all weekend at the Bunge International Trade Centre, but the real impact of Project Playhouse will be felt far beyond the show floor.
The fundraiser, hosted by Habitat for Humanity Saskatchewan in partnership with the Regina and Region Home Builders’ Association, raised just over $15,000 to support affordable homeownership across the province.
Seven locally built playhouses were auctioned off during the Regina Spring Home Show, with visitors also invited to vote for their favourite design for one dollar per vote.
In the end, the fan-favourite title went to a standout build by Collaborative Construction and Fries Tallman, a detailed playhouse designed to resemble a firetruck that captured attention throughout the weekend.
Behind the scenes, the fundraiser brought together a wide range of local businesses, students and volunteers, all contributing time, materials, and creativity to support Habitat’s mission.
Brand and marketing manager Tessa Kozun said the response from the community exceeded expectations.
“We are absolutely blown away with the community support we received,” Kozun said. “From the companies who built the playhouses, the people who voted and placed bids, everyone exceeded our expectations.”
Funds raised through Project Playhouse will go directly toward Habitat for Humanity Saskatchewan’s work building affordable housing for families in need. The organization partners with families to provide access to safe, stable homes through manageable mortgages, helping break cycles of housing insecurity.
Events like this are a key part of making that work possible, while also raising awareness about the growing need for affordable housing across the province.
“We are thrilled with the amount we raised and the feedback we got from everyone who came through the show,” Kozun added. “We can’t wait to do it again next year.”
For many who stopped to admire the playhouses, the weekend offered a chance to support a good cause. For the families who will ultimately benefit, it represents something much bigger.
