Kids who use the skate park on Rochdale Boulevard will be able to see a new sign that shows its new name.
The Terry Hincks Skate Park was unveiled earlier this week in Regina, named after former city councillor Terry Hincks who advocated for north central and inner-city youth in the city.
Regina Mayor Michael Fougere, who joined members of his family for the presentation, said Hincks would have been delighted to have a skate park named after him.
Hincks grew up in Regina and was active in the community, helping inner-city youth get involved in sports and to stay off the streets. Some of the sports he coached included football, hockey and baseball.
He was also a city councillor for 13 years.
“A wonderful colleague and friend who had a big impact on a lot of things in the city including sports and the Board of Police Commissioners,” said Fougere. “This is a tribute to him to say to the community and to his family that we remember you and we honour you.”
Fougere mentioned how Hincks ran for city council for all the right reasons, saying that he loved his city and wanted to give back to the community.
“He always said that. He felt very strongly there should be an outlet for kids to get back on the right track and have a good productive life.”
Hincks lost a five year battle with cancer, passing away in October of 2016.
