REGINA — Regina Police Service says a 24-year-old male is facing charges related to three separate arsons.
Twenty-four-year-old Courage Goodwin is charged with:
- Arson with disregard for human life;
- Two counts of arson causing damage to property; and
- Failing to comply with a probation order.
Goodwin made his first appearance on these charges in Regina Provincial Court.
The charges stem from three fires, two on March 23 of this year and one in 2024.
On March 23, shortly before 7:30 p.m., Regina Fire and Protective Services (RFPS) was dispatched to a garbage bin on fire in the 1600 block of Angus Street. While on the scene of that fire, RFPS was alerted to a vehicle on fire nearby. Police were called to the scene and, together with RFPS, determined the fire was intentionally set.
Police began an arson investigation, says RPS, and through various investigative tactics, including a review of security camera footage, they not only identified and located the suspect, but determined they would also be able to charge him related to a house fire that occurred in the 1300 Block of Retallack Street on May 5, 2024.
Safe Neighbourhood Camera Registry
Regina Police Service points out video security footage is often a crucial part of a successful investigation. Through the Community ON Crime Prevention Initiative, the Regina Police Service offers a free, voluntary program called the Safe Neighbourhood Camera Registry. The program allows participants the opportunity to assist police by letting them know if they have security cameras.
Police say participation is simple:
- Sign up and let the Regina Police Service know you have security cameras.
- Should a crime occur in the area, police can reach out to those on the camera registry to ask for video that may assist in an investigation.
"When we’re able to conclude investigations quickly and hold offenders accountable, this can assist in reducing crime in our city," says the RPS in their release.
