While it’s not uncommon for an April snowstorm in Saskatchewan, it has left many residents wondering if winter will ever leave. This week, several communities across north-central parts of the province received heavy snow thanks to an Alberta clipper system. Most highways in the Prince Albert, Melfort, and Tisdale areas were either closed or travel not advised on Wednesday as the cleanup began. There were numerous reports, particularly on highway 41 from Melfort to Saskatoon, of cars and semi trucks in the ditch thanks to the snow.
Environment Canada has released their unofficial list of snowfall amounts in the affected areas:
Meadow Lake: 37cm (14.6 inches)
Holbein: 23cm (9 in)
Saskatoon: 16-20cm (6 -8 in)
Prince Albert: 18cm (7 in)
Emma Lake: 16cm (6 in)
Nipawin: 15cm (5.9 in)
The snow won’t last long in these areas due to a fast warm up this weekend. Prince Albert, Meadow Lake, and Saskatoon areas are all expected to be above zero over the next few days with temperatures ranging from 3 to 8 degrees.
