Making sure construction is a part of Saskatchewan’s economy and growth was a big part of the Saskatchewan Construction Association’s Construction Lobby Day at the Legislature on Tuesday.

The association says members gathered outside of question period to talk to ministers on the state of the provincial economy and the role of construction in supporting economic growth.

President Mark Cooper said they discussed a few topics SCA feels is important, like the current economy. “We were encouraging the government to release a growth plan for the economy that will talk about the next decade of Saskatchewan’s growth and how we make sure the economy continues to grow so we are all able to prosper and be successful.”

Cooper said the association also discussed creating a competitive environment from a tax and regulatory perspective to ensure the province is competitive with the rest of Canada and new legislation called Prompt-Payment. “To make sure they didn’t provide any exemptions to the legislation because that’s something that’s being considered. We believe that all contractors deserve to be paid in a timely manner for the work they have completed.”

He added that they had some very positive discussions with ministers and received feedback which included a commitment to work together. “To let us know that they appreciate the importance of construction and the importance of our industry in our economy overall. They reiterated that commitment that they want to keep working with us, they want to focus on growing our economy and continue supporting our industry.”

The SCA will continue discussions over the next few months and will work with the ministry of justice to make sure legislation is created and implemented in a timely manner.
