NORTH BATTLEFORD — Cody Ian Caron, 43, appeared in North Battleford Provincial Court on April 17, where he was remanded. He is scheduled to return to court on April 23 for a show cause hearing.
Caron was wanted for being unlawfully at large after breaching his statutory release conditions earlier this year. His capture on Monday followed a multi-jurisdictional police pursuit involving two trucks, a ditch escape, and an occupied police vehicle being rammed.
The events leading to Caron’s arrest started on April 13, at about 12:15 p.m., when Battlefords RCMP initiated a traffic stop on a Ford truck on 110 Street in North Battleford. The officer identified the driver as Caron, who was wanted. When the officer activated the vehicle’s lights and sirens, Caron fled from police.
An hour later, at about 1:30 p.m., Battlefords RCMP Detachment officers, along with Saskatchewan RCMP officers from the Battlefords RCMP Crime Reduction Team (CRT), Saskatoon Warrant Enforcement Suppression Team (WEST), and Police Dog Services (PDS), located Caron on Forest Hall Road, about 10 km east of Highway 4.
Officers observed Caron and multiple other individuals on the road near the Ford truck and a second vehicle, a Dodge truck.
As officers approached the group, Caron and the other individuals got into the two trucks and attempted to flee. The Dodge truck drove in the ditch. The driver, a 39-year-old man from Surrey, British Columbia, got out of the truck and was arrested.
At the same time, the Ford truck had become inoperable. Caron got out of the Ford truck, into the Dodge truck that was in the ditch, and rammed an occupied police vehicle while fleeing at a high rate of speed. Officers weren’t physically injured.
At about 2 p.m., officers found the Dodge truck near Rabbit Lake and observed the driver running through a field. They arrested five people who had remained near the truck, one female and four males. One male was later released without charge. PDS tracked, located, and arrested Caron.
While searching the Dodge truck, police found a large sum of cash under the driver’s seat. During searches of the arrested individuals, they found two pairs of brass knuckles and an edged weapon. Officers from Blaine Lake and Spiritwood RCMP Detachments also assisted with this investigation.
Caron was arrested on his outstanding warrant for being unlawfully at large while on statutory release. He was additionally charged with resisting arrest, flight from police, dangerous driving, failing to stop after an accident, and mischief under $5,000 (damage to a vehicle).
In August 2022, Caron was banned from North Battleford.
