Assault leads to pedestrian hit by vehicle
On April 14, the Canora RCMP were dispatched to a report of a collision involving a pedestrian on Highway 9 by Crystal Lake. Investigation determined a man and a woman were parked in a truck at the side of the road. The man assaulted the woman, then forced her out of the truck. She was struck by a passing vehicle. The driver of that vehicle remained at the scene.
The truck fled. Police located the truck south of Crystal Lake and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle failed to stop for police and accelerated at a high rate of speed southbound on Highway 9. Canora RCMP members, with the assistance of Yorkton Police Dog Services, located the vehicle on a grid road in the RM of Orkney. The driver was arrested without further incident. Investigation determined the truck had been stolen from the Rosthern area, and that the man had three criminal driving prohibitions.
A 31-year-old man from Big River First Nation was charged with assault causing bodily harm, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, obstructing a police officer, operation of a motor vehicle while prohibited, flight from police officer, and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. The man was remanded into custody. The woman was taken to Yorkton Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation is ongoing.
