REGINA — A Regina man was sentenced in Regina Provincial Court on May 8 for several offences, including a firearms charge.
Justin McKay, 39, was given a 354 day sentence in a provincial correction centre. He also received 375 days credit for time already served while on remand.
He was convicted on three charges, including theft under $5,000, resisting or obstructing a peace officer, and possessing a prohibited or restricted firearm without a license. The remaining firearm charges were stayed.
McKay had originally faced three counts of possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order, possession of ammunition contrary to prohibition order, careless storage of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm when unauthorized, possession of a loaded prohibited firearm, resisting arrest, and unauthorized possession of a prohibited device or ammunition in a vehicle.
McKay was arrested on Aug. 30, 2025, after Regina police patrol officers were working with the Aerial Support Unit (ASU) investigating a series of break and enters in the 800 block of Athol Street. During the investigation, ASU officers observed a vehicle leaving the area where a man matching the description of the break and enter suspect was last seen.
Patrol officers conducted a traffic stop. One of the two male passengers got out and fled on foot. The Regina Police Service (RPS) Canine Unit tracked him to a large fence, where he again ignored commands and ran. He was arrested a short distance away. The second suspect remained at the scene and was arrested without further incident
Police later determined that none of the two were responsible for the break and enters. But a search of the vehicle uncovered a loaded sawed-off rifle, a loaded magazine, various quantities of illicit drugs, and alcohol.
The second man, 27-year-old Dylan Poorman, was charged with several firearms offences, including possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order, possession of ammunition contrary to a prohibition order, careless storage of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, unauthorized possession of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a prohibited device or ammunition in a vehicle, and possession of a loaded prohibited firearm.
A bench warrant had previously been issued for Poorman after he failed to appear in Regina court in November. He is scheduled to appear in Regina Provincial Court next on June 26.
