WEYBURN — An animal cruelty incident was among 58 calls for service for the Weyburn Police Service (WPS) during the week of May 3-10
The WPS received a call from a concerned citizen May 8 regarding the mistreatment of a dog. The witness, who was working nearby, reported observing an individual striking the animal.
The WPS said officers attended the scene, and quickly identified and arrested the involved individual. A charge of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal was laid under the Criminal Code. The WPS said the accused was later released on conditions, including not possessing or caring for any animals, and he is scheduled to appear in Weyburn Provincial Court on June 18.
The WPS said the dog was surrendered to the Weyburn Humane Society for care and further assessment. At the time officers attended, no obvious injuries were observed.
During the early morning hours of May 8, police received a report of a highly intoxicated woman walking in Weyburn and possibly attempting to walk to Radville. Officers located the woman, who the WPS said became resistant during her arrest. Once safely taken into custody, she was lodged in cells until sober.
Next, the WPS said police were called May 9 to a local licensed establishment following a report of an injured man.
Upon arrival, officers learned that one man had thrown a pool ball at another, striking him. When the victim went outside, the WPS said the suspect followed him, struck him from behind and continued assaulting him while he was on the ground.
The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle prior to police arrival. The investigation is ongoing, and the suspect has not yet been located. The WPS said it believes he is not from the Weyburn area.
The WPS also has an outstanding warrant for the arrest of 25-year-old Jordon Ganczar of Weyburn. The charges include assault by choking and failing to comply with a no-contact order.
Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is asked to contact the Weyburn Police Service at 306-484-3250 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
