Attempted murder and auto-theft-related charges have been laid after a Regina Police officer was seriously injured on a call.
RPS says around 3:45 Sunday afternoon, police were dispatched to the parkade on the 2100 block of Saskatchewan Drive.
When police arrived the vehicle was not occupied and confirmed to be stolen. One suspect returned to the vehicle and a second walked away from the scene upon seeing police.
Chief Evan Bray says Officers Corporal Justin Duck, a 17-year member with RPS, challenged the man who got into the driver’s seat and tried to make an arrest. “It was during that arrest that a short struggle ensued and during that struggle our officer was stabbed multiple times. The officer retreated, the suspect attempted to flee the scene and we had other officers on scene.”
A taser was deployed and the suspect was taken into custody.
Bray says most of Duck’s injuries were to the lower body. “One on his lower body came very close to an artery and that was very concerning for our member and ultimately for the medical staff that were treating him at the hospital. He was treated [Monday night] and kept overnight for observation and has since been released from hospital.”
Jordan Stirling is facing five charges including attempted murder and made his first court appearance Monday afternoon.
Bray says RPS will hold debrief for the station on what happened and how officers feel moving forward. He adds that Corporal Duck should be back to work before the year is over.
