REGINA — Police are reminding the public to be vigilant following several reports of scammers pretending to be police officers or employees of the Regina Police Service looking to fundraise for various charitable causes.
The Regina Police Service say they will never call to solicit funds for any reason.
-Never share personal information during an unsolicited call and do not be afraid to say no and hang up.
-Avoid sending money to anyone you do not know.
“Grandparent” scams also continue to make the rounds in our community. This scam typically involves a phone call to an elderly person with the caller claiming to be the grandchild of the victim. They tell the victim they are in trouble and need money.
The victim gets caught up in the urgency and, out of concern, sends the money either via courier service or money transfer service.
What to do?
-Take notes and ask for the caller’s phone number.
-Hang up and make inquiries of your own. If there is a real crisis, you will be able to get the facts from a trusted source and offer help.
-Awareness is the key to preventing these crimes. Please share this information with your family.
If you believe you are a victim or suspect someone is trying to defraud you, contact police immediately at 306-777-6500. Please call 911 if it is an emergency.
