REGINA — Regina’s city council has pushed back two notable agenda items to separate June meetings.
At Wednesday's council meeting, Ward 10 Coun. Clark Bezo was supposed to bring two motions forward.
The first relates to returning city employees designated for office or hybrid positions to full-time downtown work by mid-August.
Supported by Regina Downtown Business Improvement District, the move could increase vibrancy in the area while supporting transit ridership numbers.
However, Ian Cantello, president of Regina Civic Middle Management, who represents most city workers, said they’re opposed to this move.
“Demanding city workers return to the roads means more traffic, less parking and slower commutes for everyone in an area of the city which is already quite congested. It’s also a safety concern during inclement weather,” states his delegation submission.
If approved, Bezo’s motion would also direct city administration to report on any financial impacts exceeding $250,000 from workers returning to the office.
Council will now debate this item on June 24.
Bezo’s other motion, which addresses protecting Regina’s infrastructure from vehicle damage, will now be debated on June 10.
This motion comes after incidents of trucks hitting overpasses in the province, including in Saskatoon.
If approved, Bezo is seeking collaboration with the province, City of Regina, and City of Saskatoon to possibly change policies, bylaws and fines related to city infrastructure.
Evaluating cost-recovery options, including penalties, would also be reviewed by city administration.
City administration would return with a report on any proposed changes in the fourth quarter of 2026.
