5 Big Plays
- Trevor Harris was there for a good time, not a long time. With the Saskatchewan Roughriders trailing 7-0 after the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ opening drive, Harris made the most of his only offensive series at quarterback, first finding KeeSean Johnson from his own 35-yard line for a 48-yard gain, and following it up with a 25-yard catch-and-run over the middle to Kian Schaffer-Baker. That all set up a two-yard touchdown plunge from slotback A.J. Ouellette to get Saskatchewan on the scoreboard.
- Harris gave way to prospective No. 2 QB Jack Coan after that series, with Coan making a short completion to Schaffer-Baker before tossing an interception to fifth-year Bombers defensive back Evan Holm, who ran it back for a 55-yard TD return.
- Malcolm Bell continues to make a strong impression in his early days with the team. After climbing the ladder for an impressive pass knockdown in Saskatchewan’s preseason opener Monday against the Calgary Stampeders, the 2026 first-round draft pick landed his first CFL interception Saturday when he picked off Bombers QB Taylor Elgersma at the Riders’ 13-yard line.
- Justin Weaver’s sack of Winnipeg quarterback Bryce Perkins with 18 seconds to play essentially sealed the win for the Riders as it forced the Bombers into second-and-long from their own side of half, and led to Perkins throwing the team’s third interception of the day – this one to Vi Jones shortly before time expired.
- And of course saving the best for last, it was hometown hero Daniel Wiebe with the dagger in the end, catching a three-yard lob over the middle from Riders QB Brayden Schager for the game-winning score with 42 seconds left in the fourth quarter. The 2025 Saskatchewan draft pick played five seasons with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies before returning to his home turf at Griffiths Stadium in Saturday’s game.
They Said It
"I'm so incredibly proud of that kid. Super happy that he was able to have that moment here. He's been working his tail off. I challenged the kid in the offseason. He's answered so many questions that we had for him and he deserved that." -Roughriders head coach Corey Mace on Wiebe's storybook ending to the game
"Just a great throw from Schager there. It was open, he threw it well, we got the win and that's all that matters." -Wiebe on how the game-winning score looked from his perspective
"He showed that he's more than willing to be a good quarterback in this league. We've got a few guys in that locker room that can do the same but yes that's huge for us is how do you respond to adversity." -Mace on 22-year-old rookie QB Brayden Schager who threw for a game-high 179 yards, the second straight preseason game in which he led all passers in yardage
O Say Can You See?
The competition among rookie American receivers seemed to heat up even further Saturday as Abdul Janneh Jr. (six catches, 107 yards), Johnny Johnson III (four catches, 64 yards, one touchdown) and Mathew Sexton (four catches on five targets, 34 yards) finished the game as three of Saskatchewan's top four receivers.
