CANORA — The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 29 calls from May 21 to May 28, some of which included:
- one animal call,
- one breach of peace,
- one break and enter,
- two disturbing the peace,
- one failure to stop or remain at an accident,
- one false alarm,
- two Family Law Act calls,
- one Mental Health Act call,
- one mischief under $5,000,
- one public mischief,
- one suspicious person,
- two thefts under $5,000,
- two thefts of vehicles,
- one traffic collision,
- eight traffic offences,
- one Trespass Act call,
- one wellbeing check, and
- one Child, Youth, and Family Services Act call.
Shovel proves you’re tough?
On May 22, the Canora RCMP were dispatched to a report of fight in progress outside a residence in Canora. The caller told 911 two men were fighting and one man was hit in the face with a shovel. Police went to the home and investigated. Police learned that two men were drinking alcohol and got into a consensual fight after arguing about who was tougher. Both men had minor injuries and were warned about their behaviour.
Self-harm threat
The Canora RCMP were dispatched to a residence in Canora on May 22 to investigate a report of a woman threatening self harm. Police went to the home, and the woman was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and taken to the Yorkton Hospital.
Wild story investigated
A man walked into the Sturgis town office and reported being kidnapped at gunpoint in Yorkton by a woman driving a black van on May 22. The kidnapping occurred over a cigarette, and the man was able to escape when the kidnapper stopped in Sturgis. Police investigated and learned that the man was seen earlier that morning in Sturgis and that there was a suspicious white car down by the river. A woman located sitting in the white car told police her husband had gone for a walk and she was waiting for him to return. Police believe the kidnapping did not occur and that drug use by the man may have been a contributing factor. Investigation is ongoing for public mischief.
Child’s welfare questioned
On May 23, the Canora RCMP were dispatched to a residence in Rama to check on the wellbeing of a one-year-old child. The caller reported the mother of a one-year-old child was not properly taking care of the child. Police investigated and learned the mother and child had left the area. Police contacted Yorkton Child and Family Services for assistance.
Drinking dispute, police called
The Canora RCMP were dispatched on May 24 to a disturbance report in Canora. The caller reported his intoxicated wife was bugging him and to send officers. Police went to the residence which was very familiar to them and mediated a dispute between a man and woman who were both under the influence of alcohol.
Sleeping, not intoxicated
The Canora RCMP were dispatched to a report that a man was passed out behind the wheel of a truck outside a business in Canora on May 24. Police went to the truck’s location and woke a man. Police determined the man was just sleeping and was not impaired.
Vehicle ends up in slough
On May 27, the Canora RCMP were dispatched to a report of single vehicle collision east of Canora on Highway 5. Caller reported the vehicle had driven into slough. The driver was taken to hospital by EMS with nonlife threatening injuries. Investigation is ongoing.
