WEYBURN – A new pedestrian crossing is now in place at the corner of 16th St. and 5th Ave. N, supporting safer travel for pedestrians in a busy area of the community.
The City of Weyburn recently installed two poles with flashing pedestrian lights and audible crossing signals at the intersection with support from the Government of Saskatchewan’s Provincial Traffic Safety Fund, administered through SGI. The program funded $10,936 for the project.
The crossing was identified as a priority location due to its connection to Tatagwa Trails, proximity to a school zone, higher-speed traffic in the area and significant traffic volumes. Between May 29 and June 6, more than 11,000 vehicles were recorded travelling through the area.
“When we look at pedestrian safety, we consider how people are using the area every day and where additional visibility can make a meaningful difference,” said Jenna Borys, City of Weyburn municipal engineer. “The new flashing lights and audible signals give both drivers and pedestrians clearer cues at the crossing, which supports safer movement through this corridor.”
The city thanks the Government of Saskatchewan for its continued investment in traffic safety initiatives and grant programs.
“Funding opportunities like this help municipalities move forward with important safety improvements while keeping project costs manageable,” said Borys.
