It’s that time of year again when cankerworms start to become a major problem for thousands of trees in Regina. The worms are often green or green and black in colour and feed on the leaves of trees causing them to become weak or even die.
In response, the City of Regina will begin its annual cankerworm spray program where crews will be spraying over 4,000 trees with BTK to protect them from the damage caused by cankerworms. BTK is a Health Canada approved product that kills the pests but does not harm pets, humans, or other wildlife.
“We’re targeting areas where cankerworm numbers are highest so we can reduce damage and keep our trees in good shape,” stated Russell Eirich, Director of Parks & Open Space Services in a press release from the City.
Before spraying begins in a neighbourhood, residents will be given a pamphlet in their mailbox with details on when spraying will be done, why, and what residents should do. The City of Regina recommends moving vehicles off the street if possible to allow crews through and to close windows and doors.
