SaskPower is being recognized by the Canadian Electricity Association for some of the environmental, social and economic activities it is doing.
The utility has received the Sustainable Electricity Company Designation.
SaskPower’s Joel Cherry says this is a great recognition of the work that they do. “We will be a sustainable company well into the future, we are complying with our environmental and social responsibilities that we have set out and it’s essentially a marker and a bit of a feather in our cap that we are doing what we need to do to meet those standards.”
Cherry says this really recognizes a number of the activities the utility is doing, like efforts to consult and engage with Indigenous communities. “Meeting with stakeholders, making sure we have a strong health and safety record, we operate as a diversity employer, climate change mitigation and adaptation is absolutely a part of that and we have committed to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent below 2005 levels by 2030.”
He adds that they try to be a leader in sustainability efforts and it’s an honour to receive this. “It shows that we are doing what we can to ensure that our values are built into our company and our employees work and behaviors. It also tells our customers and stakeholders that we are going to continue to work with them to build a bright future.”
Eight other utilities in Canada have received the same designation.
