REGINA — Regina’s executive committee will be discussing a few key topics on Wednesday.
These include:
Upgrades to Mosaic:
The city is looking to invest $8.2 million in Mosaic Stadium by 2027.
The stadium is set to host the Grey Cup in 2027, with upgrades needed to the lighting, turf, display system and more.
If approved, funding for the project would come from Regina’s revitalization initiative stadium reserve, which would be in a negative deficit of $10.5 million.
According to a report, risks to reputation and to hosting future events could hurt the city if funding isn’t approved.
Federal funding for wastewater:
Regina’s executive committee will receive necessary approval for federal funding announced back in April for the Southwest Sewer Upgrade Project.
As part of the feds' Build Communities Strong Fund, $29 million has been awarded to the city for the wastewater project.
The Southwest Sewer Upgrade Project is intended to prevent sewer backups in Southwest Regina and reduce wastewater bypass events during rainfall.
If approved, the funding would reduce the city’s remaining funding for the project to an estimated $45.9 million. The money for the project is being used from various reserves and debt incurred by Regina.
Red Sox lease:
The Regina Red Sox are looking to enter into a revised lease agreement with the city.
Council approved an original 50-year lease in October 2024. However, since then, the Red Sox have undergone new ownership.
In this revised lease, the Red Sox would operate out of Curry Field for 25 years starting later in 2026 with an option to extend for another 10 years.
Notably, in the old lease, any improvements made by the Red Sox at Curry Field could translate into compensation at a new baseball facility located at Taylor Field on the Yards. Now, the updated version proposes any location within city limits.
All items tabled on Wednesday require final approval at next week’s Regina city council meeting.
