REGINA — The Regina Food Bank (RFB) has a new CEO.
On Wednesday, the organization’s board of directors announced that Mary Weimer will take on the role effective July 13, emphasizing that people will come first under her leadership.
“I want to meet the team and spend a lot of time with them. I want to meet our clients. I want to have conversations with our board members, our volunteers, our donors, and our large companies that are really important partners.”
Food insecurity in Regina has grown by a large number, as the RFB has reported a 259 per cent increase in usage.
In her role, Weimer said it’s important to continue helping meet immediate food insecurity while bringing innovative ideas, such as the asahtowikamik Food Hub.
“Bringing that aspect of dignity into choosing food for yourself and for your family. And like that, that's really the future. There’s always going to be a need for emergency food release for people in some ways.”
Weimer brings extensive leadership experience across a variety of sectors, including chief operating officer at Harvard Developments and both chief member experience officer and chief advice officer at Conexus Credit Union.
Beyond her leadership roles, Weimer has served the community in volunteer roles, including as a director for the Regina Public Library and Cowessess Ventures Ltd., while also serving on various boards for SaskArt, Globe Theatre, Youth Ballet of Saskatchewan, and the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce.
With her experience, Weimer said she can bring a wealth of knowledge to the CEO role while helping build relationships.
She is replacing the former RFB CEO, John Bailey, who left the organization in March to serve as CEO of Economic Development Regina.
While searching for a permanent CEO, the food bank appointed Evelyn Cerda as acting CEO.
